The Comma Club

Comma.ai is an American autonomous driving technology startup, founded in 2015 by George Hotz. You might remember him from the sh!tshow that followed Elon’s acquisition of Twitter.

The company focuses on developing aftermarket driver-assistance systems, offering hardware and software solutions that allow users to retrofit their vehicles with semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

Their flagship product, the Comma 3, is an open-source driver-assistance device running on the company's software, openpilot, which can handle tasks like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping. This means your old 2017 Toyota Corolla can have Level 2 autonomous driving for US$1,250.

Comma’s Chief Technology Officer, Harald Schäfer, gave a great interview with Jason Calacanis this week, discussing the product and how this is just phase one toward building a robotics company. One spicy take from Harald is that he doesn’t believe humanoid robots will become a material technology in the near future, despite the high levels of investment in the arena right now.
